Rosh Hashanah

Rosh Hashanah means “head of the year.” It is the Jewish New Year. The biblical name for this holiday is Yom Teruah (Day of the Shofar). It is the traditional anniversary of the creation of the world and humankind. Rosh Hashanah is also a judgment day, when Jews believe God considers our actions from the previous year and determines what the next year will be like, inscribing us for blessing in the Book of Life.

It is a two-day celebration that begins on the first day of Tishrei, the seventh month of the Jewish calendar year. Rosh Hashanah marks the beginning of the 10 Days of Awe, which conclude with Yom Kippur.

Yom Kippur

Yom Kippur is the Day of Atonement, the holiest day of the Jewish year. This day is devoted to repentance for any misdeeds that were committed in the previous year. At the conclusion of Yom Kippur, there is a joyous celebration and a breaking of the fast.

To those celebrating Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, it is customary to say:

Shanah Tovah! (A good year!)

Yom Tov! (Have a good holy day!)
